Kansas Forward Silvio De Sousa Reinstated by NCAA for 2019-2020 Season

The NCAA announced Friday that Kansas forward Silvio De Sousa is eligible to play in the 2019-2020 season after the university won an appeal that reversed the NCAA’s decision that he would be withheld from competition for two seasons.

Silvio De Sousa sat out last season while the university conducted an eligibility review and the NCAA previously ruled in early February that De Sousa must sit out the remainder of the 2018-19 season and the entirety of the 2019-2020 season because his guardian “received payment from a university booster and agent and agreed to receive additional funds from the same person.”

Here’s more from the NCAA’s statement in February:

According to the facts provided for purposes of the reinstatement request, De Sousa’s guardian received payment of $2,500 from an agent and booster of the school. He agreed to accept additional payment of $20,000 from the same individual and an Adidas employee for securing De Sousa’s enrollment at Kansas.

De Sousa, a former top-35 recruit, enrolled at Kansas midseason in January 2018. He appeared in 20 games during the 2017-18 season as a reserve forward, averaging 4.0 points and 3.7 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game.

His eligibility immediately adds frontcourt depth and experience alongside center Udoka Azubuike and forwards David McCormack and Mitch Lightfoot.
